Singapore-based HOOQ launched its video-on-demand (VOD) service in Indonesia on 14 April, entering its fourth market in Asia.

The joint venture between SingTel, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros has 35,000 hours of movies and TV shows in its content library, spanning Hollywood and Asian titles. Through tie-ups with local media companies including Media Nusantara Citra, HOOQ will also offer more than 1,200 Indonesian movies on demand.

“We have brought the best of Hollywood and local Indonesian content together, and packaged that in the price of a movie ticket,” Peter Bithos, chief executive, HOOQ, told Nikkei.

HOOQ is priced at Rp49,500 ($4) a month in Indonesia, and users without credit cards will be able to pay for the service using pre-paid credit on their mobile phones.

In addition to US giant Netflix, Hooq will face local competition from a video streaming service from Indonesian telco XL Axiata which has partnered with Malaysian cable TV provider Astro Malaysia Holdings. Malaysia’s iFlix, backed by Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) is also considering entering the Indonesian market.

HOOQ, which launched in 2015, is already available in the Philippines, Thailand and India. It will be rolled out in Singapore later this year.
