Vodafone has unveiled its Android-based video streaming device in Australia, alongside a Netflix promotion offering certain National Broadband Network (NBN) customers a complimentary 12-month subscription.

The telco plans to launch its NBN services in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth and Tasmania in April, and says that the move is part of its ongoing commitment to deliver better broadband to Australians.

The new Vodafone TV device provides access to apps and games through the Google Play Store, with 4K compatible HD resolution, and access to Netflix and YouTube with just one click on the remote control. It also offers a free-to-air TV tuner, Google voice search and dual band Wi-fi, and will be available for post-paid accounts from April for A$5 per month over 24 months, or as a one-off purchase of A$120.

Meanwhile, the complimentary subscription to Netflix is available for customers of two of the telco's 24-month NBN plans and is available until 30 June.

"Our vision is to help our customers make the most of their broadband budget by partnering with the world's best providers and offering a fast and easy connection process," said Ben McIntosh, Vodafone's consumer business unit director.

"We're not going to maintain the status quo by buying up content rights and building walls around it. We don't think it's fair that Australians are being locked out of access to content they want to watch. Australians want fast and reliable broadband, with the freedom to watch the content they love when they want."

Vodafone claims to be close to doubling its nbn footprint, following the launch of the broadband over hybrid coaxial fibre (HFC) service in December 2017.
