Molotov is suing the M6 Group over its demand that the OTT platform should pay for the distribution of its free-to-air channels.
Molotov has lodged papers with the commercial court in Paris, accusing M6 of restricting competition.
The strategy of the French commercial broadcaster has the potential to restrict access to M6, W9 and 6Ter. The broadcaster believes that rather than be presented as free-to-air, the channels should sit in a pay-tier.
Such a move could destabalise Molotov’s business model which hinges on its users upgrading from free to pay options.
Already the ability to record programmes from the channels has been switched off.
Its emerged that in recent weeks arbitration has been taking place between the two, but with discussions at a standstill, Molotov opted for the courts.
The current contract ended in March.
