ALTBalajai grows subscriber base to 3.3MN

Indian over-the-top (OTT) video platform ALTBalaji has added 2.1 million paid subscribers during the quarter from April to the end of June, reaching a total user base of 3.3 million.

ALTBalaji 4 June 2018The figure does not include those who access the service via the Reliance Jio network, according to parent company Balaji Telefilms.

The platform – which launched in April 2017 – now offers 21 original shows, as well as children’s shows and comedy shorts. A show launched in the last quarter called Gandii Baat, based on urban stories from rural India, has performed well with over 800,000 average views per week, the company said.

ALTBalaji content is dubbed in regional languages Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, with plans to extend this to include Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia.

The company has now forged partnerships and alliances in India with Airtel DTH, Yupp TV, ShareIT and Times Internet, and internationally with XL Axiata in Indonesia, Dialog in Sri Lanka and Malaysia’s Celcom.

ALTBalaji’s revenue for the first quarter in the 2018-2019 financial year was at INR 5.8 crore, compared to INR 3.7 crore at the end of the preceding quarter (January to March 2018).

Last month the video-on-demand (VOD) platform said it would invest up to INR 5 billion over the next three years to create more original content.
