LaLiga teams with Google to tackle football pirates

Google has partnered with the Spanish football league LaLiga to protect the league’s $8.2 billion in media rights revenue.

The search giant has begun blocking search results that list known pirate IPTV services. A notice citing he Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) – a 1998 United States copyright law that implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) – noted that streaming sources that are not official streams are automatically now flagged and are removed by Google.

“Among the channels they offer, we can find audiovisual content of the football competitions corresponding to the National First and Second Division League Championships, and/or the SM King of Spain Cup, competitions organized by the entity complaining here, the National Professional Soccer League,” La Liga said.

The blocking policy blocks not just individual pages, but also known pirate websites, including FAQ and About Us pages.
