In quite a volatile quarter for the Mexican telco, América Móvil reported revenue growth across Latin America for its broadband and pay-TV operations.

america movilThe company closed Q1 2016 with nearly $13 billion in revenues, 1.4% more than a year before. “Fixed broadband and pay-TV increased 7.9% and 5.9% year-on-year, but mobile data revenues decelerated, particularly in Mexico and Brazil. Central America continued to out-perform other regions, posting 5.9% service revenue growth at constant exchange rates,” stated América Móvil in its quarterly report.

The quarter, says the company, was marked by the depreciation of the Mexican peso during the first two months of the year. Indeed, currency volatility has been named by almost every pan-American telco as their greatest immediate challenge.

Despite being the smallest of América Móvil’s fixed businesses, pay-TV reached 21.9 million households throughout the region, with these figures strengthening the telco’s position as the leading pay-TV provider in a region with less than 70 million total subscriptions.

“We ended March with 81 million revenue generating units (RGUs), 3.8% more than a year before as our fixed-broadband accesses reached 26 million and the total number of pay-TV units was 22 million, up 1.7% even after net disconnections of DTH units in Brazil,” stated the company.

Peru, Colombia and Central America became América Móvil’s fastest growing operations on the fixed-line platform, while Brazil accounted for nearly half of the fixed RGUs with 37 million, followed by Mexico with 22 million units.
