Magyar Telekom and its consolidated subsidiaries have secured HUF12.2 billion (€39.6 million) of EU funds to develop their fixed broadband network.
The funds have been obtained in the first and second rounds of a tender aimed at developing digital networks nationwide, covering households in 46 districts and providing for internet access speeds of at least 30Mbps.
A total of HUF42.4 billion of EU funding has been allocated for the networks and Magyar Telekom and its subsidiaries applied for HUF34.8 billion, partly in a consortium. The HUF12.2 billion it has received, plus its own resources, will be used to reach 111,000 households in so-called ‘white areas’, where no carriers have yet provided internet access of up to 30Mbps
The telco is also using its own funds provide broadband services to a further 500,000 households by the end of this year.
