AMC takes total ownership of streaming content specialist RLJ

Having first announced plans to acquire the company back in February, AMC Networks has confirmed that it will buy the outstanding shares of RLJ Entertainment that it didn’t already own in a deal worth $65 million in cash.

acorn tv 6 june 2018The deal’s total value is approximately $274 million, according to the companies, and on completion of the merger, RLJ Entertainment will become an indirect subsidiary of AMC Networks.

RLJ operates streaming networks the Urban Movie Channel. Acorn TV, which features British television and film content. At the start of the year, the company announced its first full original series commission with Agatha Raisin and only weeks ago anoucned that it was expanding Acorn into Latin America.

“[The RLJ] management team is extraordinary, having successfully transitioned Acorn TV from a home video and DVD business to a leading direct-to-consumer subscription service, and growing both Acorn TV and UMC in a competitive environment, by offering excellent, sought-after content and creating strong brands,” said Josh Sapan, president and CEO of AMC Networks.
